Pontiac is looking to regain its title as the real performance division of the General Motors Empire. The Grand Prix nameplate will continue along side the G8 at least until 2008. This new Pontiac performance sedan will be based on GM's Global RWD platform used by the Holden Commodore, a RWD full-size sedan sold in Australia.

The new G8 will come with a choice of engines. Base models will feature a 261 hp 3.6L V6 coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The top-end GT will earn its stars and stripes with a powerful 362 hp 6.0 L V8 with cylinder shut-off mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Aesthetically, the G8 has been tweaked to look more like a Pontiac. It harbours the famous Pontiac dual-fork grille, fog lamps, large wheels and the equally famous wide-track first brought to us by the Grand Prix. Other styling elements include wide flared fenders, dual or quad chrome tailpipes and heat vents located on the hood.

The G8 will be a proper American family car that will finally compete with the ever popular Chrysler LX cars. The G8 will be built in Australia and is expected in showrooms by early 2008.
