Four-wheel Traction Perfects Handling
The hefty low-rev torque output delivers pleasing drive-ability. The 9-3 AWD seldom has to raise its pulse beyond a measly few thousand rpm to keep up with traffic or deal effectively with hills. A dash-mounted button engages a Sport mode, which alters the transmission's shift mapping in favour of performance over economy. The net effect is faster downshifts and longer gear holding.

On-road agility improved with XWD
The agility of the XWD-equipped 9-3 is sensational. XWD has eliminated torque-steer and imparted handling dynamics more inline with a rear-wheel drive sports sedan. The 9-3 Aero XWD communicates with its driver with such clarity that it makes pushing this vehicle in the corners is a piece of cake.

Ride quality can be a bit unwieldy at times depending on how abysmal the road surface is.

Although some body lean is evident, the car remains stable and calm as it digs in and fuses itself to the pavement. When thrown wildly, its electronic stability program will discreetly intervene to maintain control. While not unpleasant, ride quality can be a bit unwieldy at times depending on how abysmal the road surface is.

The wrap
Saab enthusiasts are sure to adore the 9-3 Aero with its optional XWD traction, which brings with it an increase in power and improved handling dynamics. This is a uniquely satisfying sedan from a driver's perspective, however satisfaction comes at a price, and in the case of my fully-decked tester that price is a steep $52,825. And to add a final financial hit, the hot little V6 requires premium fuel.
