The crossblade
Movie buffs will be interested to know that the crossblabe concept, one of the main attractions at the 2001 Geneva Auto Show, was inspired from Ridley Scott's Blade Runner Given the strong reaction from consumers, the company produced 2,000 units with water-repellent panels and fabrics, dual rollover bars behind the seats and high-strength, foldable door beams. They sold like hot cakes.
Performance and tuning enthusiasts were not forgotten. Mercedes-Benz asked Brabus, a performance car tuner, to develop parts and accessories for the smart while improving its performance levels. In 2002, the smart Brabus was released, allowing owners to add a sportier and more masculine touch to their car.
Then, in 2005 and 2006, with the emergence of crossover utility vehicles, smart created the crosstown, a small hybrid-powered offroader with all-wheel drive.
A four-door smart was also introduced, although it didn't last very long. It has to be said that most smart cars only sold in limited numbers and that the company's overall nonprofitability aborted several projects, including the four-door and sport models.
smart needed to get back to its roots. So, engineers started working on the second generation, hoping to solidify the success of the original concept which today enjoys a well-deserved popularity.
