Under the hood is the familiar and highly-reliable 2.4L, 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine, which Honda uses to power many different vehicles. This mill is definitely not a sprinter, but it still performs efficiently. The power-to-fuel economy ratio is commendable despite the loss of a few ponies and the small weight gain. Spirited driving at low revs results in an average of 8.9 liters per 100 kilometers. It should be noted that torque has been increased from 164 to 172 pounds-feet.
The 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is a quick operator which enhances the car's liveliness in more aggressive driving conditions. Having said that, there's a lot of smoothness and comfort dialled into the package.
It's a shame that the steering is overly assisted because it makes the driving experience feel more artificial. Still, despite average handling and a feeling of heaviness in corners, the new TSX proves to be relatively fun to drive. Agility might not be a core value of this car, but the lower, longer and wider stance somewhat makes up for it.
As for the brakes, they perform decently in most circumstances. Notwithstanding the increased weight (50-90 kilos depending on the trim level), the TSX is able to slow down and come to a full stop with great confidence.
Competition
This Acura finds itself in a peculiar position, as it offers a single powertrain option. The closest rivals include the Saab 9-3 ($35,950), Volvo S40 ($31,495) and Volkswagen Passat 2.0T ($29,975). I should also mention the base variants of such luxury models as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class ($35,800), BMW 3-Series ($35,900), Audi A4 ($35,350) and Lexus IS ($31,900).
Conclusion
The 2009 Acura TSX is an interesting choice based on its overall performance and high levels of quality. However, many potential buyers will look elsewhere due to its radical (perplexing?) exterior design. What's more, driving dynamics do not exactly live up to the Acura name. Losing a couple ounces of sportiness in favor of a more mainstream character will prove costly if you ask me. But if you're looking for a Euro-flavored Accord, the TSX offers great value.
