If the V8-powered Audi R8 with its 420-horsepower isn't enough machine for you, you'll be pleased to know that the German automaker is stuffing in a 525-horsepower V10 engine for the 2009 model year.

The powerplant in question is derived almost entirely from the V10 unit that will power the 2009 R8 GT3 race car in 2009- which Audi is developing for customer teams in conformance with GT3 rules.

Power is rated at 391 lb.-ft of torque and 525 horsepower at 8000 RPM. Fitted with a manual transmission, the R8 V10 weighs in at just 3571 lbs., or about 70 pounds heavier than the V8 model. With such a favorable power to weight ratio, 0-100 km/h is claimed in under 4 seconds.

Of course, part of the potent acceleration has to do with Audi's Quattro all wheel drive, which is track-developed to deliver tenacious grip on any surface.

When the R8 V10 goes on sale, enthusiasts can discern it from the standard model by its wider side skirts, more accentuated side-blades and matte finished exhaust grilles. The all-LED headlamps are a first, and further work to separate the car from its competition.

The R8 V10 first hits German roadways this spring.
