Once inside, life isn't always enjoyable. Using the iDrive interface for the various car functions requires a lengthy learning curve; in fact, after a full week, I still had to think twice before changing a particular setting. The folks at BMW might say it's improved and easier to use, but the new iDrive still feels like another invention from the Rubik guy!

On the plus side, the seats offer reasonable comfort and many adjustments to fine-tune your driving position. All occupants enjoy ample room and no one feels squeezed.

On the road
The 2009 BMW X5 xDrive35d proves pleasant and relatively fun (the key word here is "relatively"). At cruising speed, the steering is sharp and vigorous, allowing the driver absolute control of the vehicle. At parking speeds, however, the steering wheel becomes almost as heavy to manipulate as my training dumbbells (of course, I'm exaggerating, but you get my point). Extra effort is required for these maneuvers.

The 2009 BMW X5 xDrive35d proves pleasant and relatively fun.

On a positive note, the brakes on the X5 are exemplary: they deliver immediate, fade-free stopping power with great precision. Furthermore, the automatic transmission shifts in a flash, never leaving any doubt about its role and intervention, both during upshifts and downshifts.

Of course, the xDrive all-wheel drive system delivers stunning performance. It operates quickly and smartly, without ever affecting the driving experience.

Wrap-up
As I've said many times, I'm now a fan of diesel engines. The few days I spent behind the wheel of the 2009 BMW X5 xDrive35d only confirmed my stance. Sure, a number of improvements could be made to the vehicle, but the quality of the powertrain and the comfort of the interior will quickly make you forget about the little irritants.
