The 2009 BMW X6 is quite a strong-character vehicle and, much like with humans, this character can be pretty intimidating at first glance. It's entirely possible that you find it unattractive and want to look elsewhere, but give it a chance and you'll see how fast this bold new vehicle can grow on you. In fact, count me among those who applaud the German automaker for the unique, daring style of this outrageous cross between an SUV and a sports coupe.
One thing's for sure: the X6 can't be mistaken for anything else on the market right now, particularly when viewed from the sides or the back. While purists will be dumbfounded at the mere sight of this machine, it has to be said that BMW is arguably the only brand that's bold and confident enough to launch such a polarizing product -- either you love it or you hate it. This "experiment" (if you want to call it that way) can already be termed a success since X6 sales are strong and the turnover ratio at BMW dealerships is considerable... despite the manufacturer's suggested retail price of nearly $80,000.
With pure German looks and rigorous build quality, the X6 is all about style and presence, as the tastefully massive alloy wheels and substantial girth will attest. The rear window rises extremely high and the roofline literally collapses beyond the B-pillars for a very coupe-like appearance. The taillights are huge and impossible to miss, while dual tailpipes are integrated to the rear bumper. Up front, the fascia is reminiscent of the X5's, the vehicle which the new X6 is derived from.
The interior is brilliantly executed. BMW designers focused on sportiness while also adding a classic touch with fine wood appliqués. This powerful layout further emphasizes the vehicle's split personality. The equipment is comprehensive, including several interesting features but also irritant ones like iDrive. Although improved for 2009, the latter is still very complicated to use. Besides, the rearview camera is totally useless at night.
The seats are very comfortable; however, they're not suited for all shapes and sizes. One of my esteemed colleagues expressed visceral disdain for these buckets (not to mention access to the cabin) as he was unable to find a proper driving position. Personally, though, I liked the seat cushions, which proved to be a perfect fit for my body style. These are almost true racing seats. Unfortunately, the aggressive exterior styling means that only four people can sit inside. That comes as a surprise since the X6 is definitely not small. Cargo room is also affected by the swooping roofline.
