It’s probably just me... Otherwise, the Z4 is an impressive road car that is at ease with jaunts in the countryside and with crawling through downtown traffic. I essentially have but one real negative comment to make on the Z4 and it has to do with the retractable roof: On most road surfaces, washboard or nearly flat, the joints between the roof panels would make a creaking noise. Unlike most other BMWs, which are as tight as a drum, the roadster sounded as though the assembly quality was not up to par. Or, perhaps it only needed an adjustment I have however noticed this complaint in other publications.
The next collectable one
Where the Z3 seemed a little common place, especially the 1.9L 4-cylinder version, the latest Z4 literally slams itself into notoriety thanks to its stunning styling and powerplants, especially the 35i. Should BMW decide (and they had better...) to introduce an M version, all bets are off as to how fast and insane this one will be.
At around $70,000, the Z4 sDrive35i plays alongside the Porsche Boxster S which is a more focused car but, for the moment, a far more common sight on our roads. The choice is yours. I’m still undecided...
