A colleague from the technical department was literally drooling with envy when I told him the subject of my latest road test. In fact, as soon as he saw the car enter the parking lot of our offices, he couldn’t stop staring at it through the window. Of course, this guy bleeds BMW blue, but the fact is that anyone out there can recognize the style, charisma and excitement of the all-new 2009 Z4.

The new model dons a coupe-like attire with a power retractable hard top.

This redesigned roadster looks sleeker and more refined while preserving its sporty character. In other words, it beautifully combines sex appeal and sportiness in a single package. Picture it as the automotive equivalent of Chanel ready-to-wear that can also serve for big occasions.

Styling revisions
While the Z4 has always stood as a genuine convertible, the new model dons a coupe-like attire with a power retractable hard top that folds away at the push of a button. There are no secret latches and no awkward move to make -- just sit down, hit the button and smile! Fun under the sun is less than 20 seconds away!

Obviously, a few compromises were needed to allow perfect integration of the hard top. For instance, the rear section had to be extended a little to accommodate the roof inside the trunk. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing; from a design standpoint, I believe the 2009 BMW Z4 achieves a more balanced stance.

Granted, the folded top considerably reduces cargo room, which means that a couple of trips back and forth to the supermarket are necessary… unless you use the family’s primary vehicle. While this roadster is highly entertaining on the road, it does not seem to know what practicality is.

Lavish interior

Once you manage to take your eyes away from this gorgeous machine, you can gracefully drop in the driver’s seat despite the low ride height of the Z4. Me and my legendary slim figure easily accessed the cockpit and comfortably settled in. From there, finding a good driving position is child’s play.
