Extended functionality
Along with the many comfort and convenience features we've come to expect in modern people movers, Ford has added some less expected accoutrements such as an optional fridge that will chill or freeze its contents depending on needs. My tester was equipped with this feature, which sits between the two second-row bucket seats and doubles as an armrest when closed.

A 110-volt 15-watt power outlet is also provided, which can energize laptops and other household electronics. Standard on the Limited model and optional on the SEL trim level is Ford's SYNC, voice-activated in-vehicle communications and entertainment system. A voice-activated navigation system with reverse camera is optional with both trim levels.

V6 power and AWD traction
Unless the AWD option is selected, the Flex is a FWD drive vehicle. My tester was the AWD version; an option I would definitely opt for given the need to drive kids to local ski hills on a weekly basis.

Only one engine choice is available to power the Flex. It's Ford's long-serving 3.5-litre Duratec V6. In this assignment it develops 262 horsepower @ 6,250 rpm and 248 pound-feet of torque @ 4,500 rpm. Appended to the Duratec is a manual-mode-equipped six-speed automatic transmission.

My fuel consumption of 14L/100 km in city driving in the AWD Flex was close enough to its rating of 13.5-litres to call it even, especially when my 'economy be damned' driving was factored in. Highway driving is rated at 9.2L/100 km. The FWD Flex ups economy to 12.6L/100 km city driving and 8.4L/100 km on the highway.

Taking it to the streets
The Flex is a highly rewarding rig to drive. It delivers a sense of substance without feeling excessively large or ponderous. Thanks to its high seating position and large slabs of glass, visibility is wonderful from all seating positions.

I enjoyed being behind the wheel of Ford's innovative CUV. Its smooth ride and quiet cabin is sure to enhance any trip, whether it's to a remote getaway or a local soccer field. Power is adequate but not a standout in this segment. That said, Ford has done a commendable job of refining the Duratec's operation.
