Volkswagen's earned itself a name in the hearts of diesel enthusiasts across North America with its TDI powered vehicles. The German automaker is gearing up to launch its best TDI engine ever for 2009, packing a sixteen-valve architecture that helps produce 140 horsepower and 235 foot pounds of torque. The clean new TDI is fueled by a common-rail setup feeding high pressure injectors and allowing for smoother and quieter operation then ever before.

But Volkswagen's not only gearing their new TDI's for street use. Starting this spring, racing fans will see TDI technology at selected North American race tracks in the SCCA sanctioned Jetta TDI Cup series.

"The Jetta TDI Cup racing series will celebrate Volkswagen's diesel technology and heritage in motorsports as good, clean fun," said Stefan Jacoby, CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Not only will the young drivers gain real-life track experience in a factory-prepared race vehicle, it will allow them to develop their own mindset of today's clean diesel technology, and foster increased awareness of its advantages in this new era of environmental sensitivity."

Up to 30 Jetta TDI's will compete in the hands of aspiring drivers who will compete in a full field of clean diesel powered racing cars. For racing duty, the TDI engine is tuned for an additional 30 horsepower and 70 foot pounds of torque over the production model. Other performance upgrades are fitted as well.

"With the Jetta TDI Cup, Volkswagen has created an amazing platform to develop young drivers and expand their knowledge about clean and quiet diesel technology," said Robert Wildberger, president and CEO of SCCA Pro Racing. "We look forward to the series in hopes that it will attract more attention to the drivers and advantages of diesel power."

The new Jetta TDI goes on sale this summer as a 2009 model.
