Sportier and more mature
The second powertrain on the menu is a 272-hp 3.7L V6. Nothing new here, as it's the same engine that powers the CX-9, not to mention a few other vehicles from the Ford family. The 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode, exclusive to Mazda, is a competent performer.

A couple of amenities have been added for 2009, both with the GS and GT. Admittedly, though, the standard equipment was already impressive, including such features as alloy wheels, traction control and, in GT trim, a 10-speaker BOSE premium sound system.

The 3.7L V6 engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode.

Inspired driving
The road is where the new Mazda6 shines the most. The steering is more precise than ever while offering improved feedback and a more convenient turning radius. It may be light for sharp cornering maneuvers, but it's much more responsive than any other steering system in the category. I would even claim that the Mazda6's steering alone justifies the "Zoom-Zoom" label. Add a stiffer chassis and you get flawless stability and a very dynamic driving experience.

The brakes have also been revised, but not with the goal of boosting performance. Rather, engineers strived to refine the brake pedal feel. Apply just a slight pressure on the brakes and your foot will feel all the action. Another upgrade is the suspension, particularly the shocks which have been repositioned to improve the ride while optimizing weight transfer control.

The new Mazda6 doesn't come without flaws, obviously. Fuel economy is still a weakness of the Japanese automaker. That being said, with so many improvements and the same great sportiness, the 2009 Mazda6 will likely appeal to those looking for a cleverly thought-out driver's car.

Other midsize sedan manufacturers have plenty of reasons to worry; the redesigned Mazda6 has definitely reached new levels of maturity.
