The 361-hp V8 propels the GT from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds when using the manual mode of the 6-speed autobox. It also allows sprints from 80 to 120 km/h in 4.8 seconds in third gear. As for the 256-hp V6, accelerations from 0-100 km/h were clocked at 9.6 seconds; passing maneuvers were completed in 6.24 seconds with the manual mode.
On the road, the G8 GT feels heavy but always maintains good balance. Likewise, the steering is a bit heavy yet very precise. Stability is such that you don't even notice when you exceed legal speed limits; setting the sound alert might be a good thing to remind you how fast you're driving.
The Pontiac G8 V6 is all about smoothness, whereas the V8-powered GT adds firmness to the ride. The former's suspension is pretty compliant, while the latter's proves tight and relatively noisy on less-than-impeccable pavement.
Which one to choose?
Try them both first. Whichever you pick, you'll get a nice material selection and quality fit and finish. While I did like the performance and stability of the GT, I preferred the base model which is all-around more satisfying. It shines in pretty much every aspect, and passenger comfort is superior. You'll no doubt be attracted by the low MSRP, but I'm betting that you will want to select one or two option packages for added value.
