OTTAWA, April 29 /CNW Telbec/ - Canada's Transport Minister, John Baird, announced today that Frito Lay Canada is the recipient of the 2009 SCL Green Supply Chain Award. The award, which is issued by Supply Chain and Logistics Association Canada (SCL), is sponsored by Transport Canada and was presented yesterday in Vaughan, Ontario.

Recipients of the annual award are selected on the basis of strong environmental leadership and their firm commitment to promoting green transportation standards.

"This award recognizes the environmental leadership Frito Lay Canada has shown in every aspect of its business operations," said Minister Baird. "The company is a model of corporate responsibility and is an example to others."

A high percentage of Frito Lay Canada's tractor engines use modern emission-reducing technology, and its delivery vehicles have been custom designed using lightweight materials to reduce fuel consumption. These and other measures the company has implemented make its operations more efficient and benefit the environment.

Frito Lay Canada is a member of the PepsiCo Inc. family of companies. As Canada's largest snack food company, Frito Lay Canada employs over 4,500 people and operates five plants - Taber (Alberta), Lethbridge (Alberta), Cambridge (Ontario), Lauzon (Quebec) and Kentville (Nova Scotia). Frito Lay Canada's sustainability efforts support PepsiCo's broader commitment to reduce the use of water by 20 per cent, energy by 20 per cent and fuel consumption by 25 per cent by 2015.

As part of the Government of Canada's environmental agenda, Transport Canada also supports industry efforts through its ecoFREIGHT initiatives, which are aimed at reducing environmental and health impacts of freight transportation through the use of technology.
