Two new engines
Both the Corolla and Matrix come with a choice of two new 4-cylinder engines: a 1.8L unit producing 132 horsepower and 128 foot-pounds of torque and a 2.4L mill generating 158 horsepower and 162 foot-pounds of torque. They use a double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16 valves and a dual variable valve timing system with intelligence (VVT-i).

1.8L 4-cylinder engine

With the Corolla, the 1.8L engine will come standard on CE, LE and S models, either with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic. The XRS model will be the lone recipient of the 2.4L powerplant, mated to a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission.

With the Matrix, only the base model will sport the 1.8L, while XR, XRS and AWD models will get the 2.4L. That's right: all-wheel drive is coming back to the Matrix!

Finally, we should point out that ABS brakes will be standard across the lineup, while Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) will be exclusive to XRS models.
