When Fiat announced in November its five-year plan for Chrysler, it was a good-news/bad-news thing for Dodge Viper.

The bad news is that Viper is not part of that five-year plan. Production will end next July.

The good news is that it will go out with a bang, with a special edition model, limited to 500 units.

Also good is that Fiat announced it is considering filling that looming “super-car” hole in the Dodge line-up with something it might cook up in Europe, where it could leverage the sporting expertise of its Italian prestige brands -- Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo. Projected introduction date? Sometime in the 2012 calendar year.

In the meantime, the 2010 Viper for sale at Dodge stores is essentially the same one they were selling in 2009.
Which is definitely not too shabby…

Viper is offered in Roadster and Coupe models, both pack 8.4-litre V10 engines capable of 600 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. They can dispense the “quarter mile” run in a touch over 11 seconds.

Other hardware includes a ZF twin-disc clutch six-speed manual transmission, and 14-inch brake rotors gripped by Brembo 44/40 dual-opposing piston calipers in the front, and Brembo 42/38 dual-opposing calipers in the rear.

More speed can be found when you order the ACR (American Club Racer) package, which offers race-ready hardware and competition tuning for optimal on-track performance. Among other enhancements, it makes Viper 40 pounds lighter and gives it considerably more down force.

Made to be beautifully brutal, any Viper flavour is sure to please.
