The sense of occasion
A limited slip differential (upgraded to an electronically-variable LSD in the XKR) ensures better rear traction.

The six-speed transmission executes clean and precise shifts (which become quicker and sharper under Dynamic Mode) but there are paddle shifters for those who prefer to row their own gears.

Although it lacks the square sure-footedness of a BMW M3, the XK delivers a balanced, confident ride that inspires driving for the sheer joy of it. I found myself making excuses to slip behind the wheel, logging well over 1,000 km during my all-too-short week.

At $98,070, there are several vehicles in my tester's segment that offer equivalent luxury and equal or greater power. (Photo: Lesley Wimbush/Auto123.com)

Although driving some high-end brands leaves me almost apologetically guilty at such an ostentatious display of luxury, I felt no such reluctance being seen in the XK. Rather than begrudging admiration, it received wide grins, thumbs-up and open praise for its rare beauty.

At $98,070, there are several vehicles in my tester's segment that offer equivalent luxury and equal or greater power. But few deliver the sense of occasion that is the essence of Jaguar.
