Some don't like surprises, others do. In our business, they're nice to see but equally a pain as we can't get ready and educate ourselves beforehand, especially for an auto show. These days, thanks to the internet, it's practically impossible to keep anything under wraps.

But Subaru managed to do it. There were rumours circulating about, speculating that this “Confidence in Motion” (their new brand statement) Concept was going to be a hint at the next Impreza but no one had any pictures to prove it. Bravo Subaru!

Now, about the Impreza concept. Well, first, let's start with the existing Impreza. Let's be quite honest: it is not the prettiest Impreza Subaru has ever offered. As a hatchback, I can deal with the taillights but I'm still not crazy about the headlights and the way they attempt to blend in with the front grille. The only way it can look decent is if the WRX or STI is white. The sedan doesn't work for me.

Thankfully, the cars still feel and drive like true Subarus. I'm actually in the process of completing a comparison test between the STI and the EVO. A short while latter, I'll have a review of the WRX sedan on line.

But now, back to the “Confidence in Motion” Impreza Concept. I love it. Myself and a few other journos were having a discussion about what turned us on at the show and this car kept on coming up. The Elantra, which was supposed to be somewhat of a surprise (embargoes were broken) turned out to be #2.

From the pictures, you can easily distinguish the Subaru signature fascia because of its hexagon grille with central spread wings on both sides of the logo. This characteristics is familiar but as you can tell, it has evolved and will serve as the identity for the next generation of Subaru automobiles.
