With regard to cargo, this Lexus generally offers lots of it. However, you end up with tiny fractions whenever the third-row seat is occupied.

Endless arsenal
The 2010 Lexus GX 460 houses a myriad of features, gadgets and amenities, starting with luxury items like a high-precision navigation/multimedia system and Bluetooth hands-free phone interface. The latter, however, offers questionable sound quality and voice control.

Then comes a long list of convenient features and hardware. As an off-road capable SUV, the GX is built on a ladder frame instead of using the more popular unibody construction. Downhill Assist is available at your fingertips, while the four-wheel drive system includes low-range gearing and a locking differential for improved traction on tricky terrain.

Under the hood lies a 301-horsepower V8 that’s pretty potent, yes, but also very thirsty. A two-way trip at legal speeds between Toronto and Montreal resulted in an average of 12.6 L/100 km, which is about the best you can expect in real-world driving conditions.

Flawless ride
Beyond its remarkable off-road potential, the GX remains a Lexus at heart, meaning comfort and silence reign supreme at all times. Unfortunately, a lifeless steering low on feedback and a constant need to readjust the steering wheel angle are also part of the mix.

At the end of my road test, I came to question the very existence of this big SUV from Lexus. Very few owners will risk venturing deep into the woods, while its lack of driving excitement makes it irrelevant in and around the city.

For sure, the GX 460 represents a fair compromise between massively-sized SUVs and less family-friendly compact 'utes… provided, of course, that you can swallow the financial investment and live with the threats of environmentalists.
