The Mazda 5 is successfully proving that a little minivan can provide great big fun. With a dynamic body, snappy four-cylinder engine and available five-speed manual transmission, it’s zoned in on enthusiast drivers after economical family transport.

Don’t let the dual sliding doors fool you. The Mazda 5’s fog lamps, alloy wheels, privacy glass and sporty stance communicate more energy and excitement than bigger minivan models. It also looks agile and car-like, rather than clumsy and enormous. If you need the flexibility of a minivan but can do without the excessive size and fuel consumption, the Mazda 5 is worth a close look.

Powering all models is a 2.3 litre, 153 horsepower engine with 148 lb.-ft of torque. The engine delivers adequate acceleration when called upon, though it’s also able to turn in highway cruising mileage as low as 7L / 100km. All Mazda 5 models are front wheel drive.

Inside, up to 6 people can enjoy the ride—thanks to standard power accessories and a commanding view of the road ahead. The 5 boasts plenty of interior storage, as well as numerous flexible seating configurations to accommodate a variety of cargo items.

Cruise control, air conditioning, Bluetooth and an upgraded stereo can be added, too. Additionally, the 5 is available with traction control, stability control and a full complement of airbags for enhanced safety.

For 2010, the basic Mazda5 GS starts at $20,495, while the 5 GT tops the range at $29,385 with all the options.
