EVO vs STI: the grime
Now, the EVO's two main shortcomings: 5-speed box and tinny shell. In a car such as the EVO, a 5-speed manual transmission should be prohibited. Not only does it make highway cruising the equivalent of having someone constantly drilling your eardrums, as the engine spins at over 3,000 rpm at 115 km/h, but any manner of throttle pressure results in highly illegal activities; this rev range is smack in the engine's sweet spot. In the wrong province, this could cost you.

In an EVO or an STI, sound insulation is not important. However, the impression of solidity is. Now, I'm not saying the EVO is flimsy, but I am stating that the STI borders on a tank-like build by comparison. Take that any way you'd like.

EVO or STI?
I say: An incredibly tough decision. I can only sum it this way: If you choose the EVO, prepare to pack an extra (or a pair) pair of cojones as this car will force you to learn car-control techniques and how to delicately feather a throttle pedal. Once you've mastered the above, the EVO will be a tremendously rewarding toy.

Bert concluded by saying the following: If he was still 18 years of age, he’d jump on the EVO. Given that he's at a ripe old 43, the STI suits him much better. (Photo: Matthieu Lambert/Auto123.com)

As for the STI, it will always make you look like a hero. With stickier grip than a wad of gum stuck in your hair, this car will let you do no wrong. By the same token, you'll probably learn less about your personal limits and because the car is so good, advancing your skill set will take much longer.

For all these reasons, I'd go for the EVO, the tested GSR and not the MR, and hate it everyday on my way to the track but be totally enamoured with it once I'm out there.

Bert says: Both cars offer performance in big ways. The EVO does stand out for a very good reason. Dynamically speaking, it overshadows the STI on a track. This car is all about the pleasure and reward the driver gets when maxing it out while negotiating an apex. This does come at the expense of the daily commute.

Here's where the STI shines. It is dangerously efficient, has loads of grip and is certainly tame enough to take you to and from work without twisting your spine into a pretzel-like shape.

Bert concluded by saying the following: If he was still 18 years of age, he’d jump on the EVO. Given that he's at a ripe old 43, the STI suits him much better.
