There's lots going on in Canada's littlest car
18) The fortwo’s five-speed automated transmission may be an issue for some. It upshifts early, downshifts hesitantly, and often makes the engine lug along from very low RPMs. It’s like being in a vehicle driven by a stick-shift novice.

Drivers can work to lift off or add throttle to help smooth out the shifting-- but those who do will probably wish for an actual manual. Unfortunately, none is available.

19) The diesel engine was dropped from the fortwo after the 2007 model year. Now, a one-litre, three-cylinder gas engine is mounted beneath the trunk floor, and sends 70 horsepower to the rear wheels. It gets the fortwo whisked up to city traffic speeds in decent order. Most first-time passengers will comment on how it’s ‘not as slow’ as they expected.

For 2010, smart fortwo pricing starts under $15,000. (Photo: Mercedes-Benz)

It’s a notably quiet engine, too. Only the slow, lurching gearshifts let it down.

20) Don’t be scared to drive your fortwo in the winter. With snow-tired mounted to the 15-inch wheels, off-the line traction is good, and an effective stability control system keeps the car in line. Heated seats are welcomed, and the cabin heats up quickly once the engine reaches operating temperature.

21) Unfortunately for wintertime parking-lot donut enthusiasts, the
fortwo’s stability control system can’t be switched off.

22) For 2010, smart fortwo pricing starts under $15,000 and tops out around $22,255. Several trim levels are available, with several standalone options on each. A convertible ‘cabriolet’ model is available, too.
