Drivers can work to lift off or add throttle to help smooth out the shifting-- but those who do will probably wish for an actual manual. Unfortunately, none is available.

Now, a one-litre, three-cylinder gas engine is mounted beneath the trunk floor, and sends 70 horsepower to the rear wheels. It gets the fortwo whisked up to city traffic speeds in decent order. Most first-time passengers will comment on how it’s ‘not as slow’ as they expected.
It’s a notably quiet engine, too. Only the slow, lurching gearshifts let it down.
