9 to 5
Of course, 4Runner needs to tackle the 9-to-5 grind of its owners, too. On the highway, the ride is well sorted and gentle on most surfaces while offering a tremendous forward view. Wind noise is kept surprisingly civilized, especially given that the 4Runner displaces more air than the average wood-shed.

The tester was topped off by a huge cabin that featured heaps of storage, upscale trim, chunky, oversized controls, a sliding tailgate window, folding rear seats, a Bluetooth phone interface and more.

Classic SUV handling, space and manoeuvrability
Naturally, the 4Runner is no exercise in handling dynamics when bare pavement passes underfoot.

Though the body-on-frame construction works wonders for a feeling of thick, solid toughness, it can leave the 4Runner feeling like an inflatable bouncy-castle when cornering over a rougher surface. Additionally, the soft suspension and relatively quick steering can make for a nervous feel at speed, though the overall experience is very much laid back and comfortable.

Still, after a week, your writer’s only major complaint of the 4Runner was its turning radius-- which is actually more of a turning orbit.

You’ll need lots of room to turn this behemoth around, but if you’re on a trail, chances are you won’t need to.
