5. VW Golf GTI. There’s a reason why it won Canadian Car of the Year for 2010, and it’s based on a formula of bang-for-the-buck. What a great handling, practical and fun car for the price.

4. Ford Escape Hybrid. Combine hybrid economy with SUV versatility, and I’m there. “Brilliant” is how I describe an SUV that’ll pull the trail while minimizing the harm.

3. Jeep Liberty. Similar to the Escape but more rugged and off-road’able. Plenty of “go anywhere” guts for not so much money.

2. Mazda MX-5. This unwavering stalwart of roofless fun just gets better with time. I love the retro-feel of Mazda’s thoroughly modern roadster.

1. The winner in the “fun factor” category has got to be the MINI Cabriolet. It’s not the most practical of the bunch but it seats four while transporting its occupants BMW-style to the 60s with John, Paul, George and Ringo. “Play some rock’n roll Ringo.”

So there you have it. Now if money wasn’t a factor, I think I could enjoy myself in the $567,955 Rolls Royce Drop Head Coupe—though not sure where to stack the muddy bikes or put the wet dog.
