The 6th-generation of the GTI will hit the market later this year, and VW has released some more info on the iconic hot hatch.

Under the hood, the new GTI keeps the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that develops 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices remain a 6-speed manual and optional 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, aka DSG. VW claims 30 percent of GTI buyers will opt for the latter.

Like the current GTI, acceleration is strong, thanks to the engine's generous low-end torque: 0-100 km/h is attainted in 6.9 seconds with both transmissions, and the car reaches a top speed of 240 km/h.

The exhaust system of the 2010 model is redesigned and features dual tailpipes as well as an improved engine acoustics inside the cockpit. Springs, dampers and rear stabilizer bars are also new, and the car's front end is lowered by 22 mm while the rear drops by 15 mm.

Traction and handling is said to improve thanks to a new electronic locking differential that VW calls XDS. In conjunction with the stability-control system, XDS acts as a transverse differential to reduce understeer while cornering.

Aside from the new styling, the interior of the GTI also gets refreshment but keeps its chic Interlagos plaid seat pattern.
