Outstanding Fuel Economy is the Icing
The Jetta’s mill is an excellent example of this functionality. Its full dosage of torque is presented just above idle. That translates into outstanding acceleration off-the-line without the need to push the engine to redline or anywhere near it.

What is heard and felt isn’t the frenetic cacophony of a million angry bees but rather a deeper engine note that’s authoritative without being intrusive or irritating.

Jetta diesel receives VW’s sophisticated DSG transmission
Volkswagen’s 6-speed DSG transmission combines the virtues of a manual gearbox with those of an automatic transmission. In doing so, it offers lightning-quick automatic gear changes or equally quick manually initiated shifts via VW’s Tiptronic functionality.

The DSG technology also contributes to the Jetta’s outstanding fuel economy and “fun to drive” factor.

Behind the wheel

Volkswagen cabins are always well cemented together, and the Jetta TDI exemplifies this characteristic. In addition to its solidity, the cabin is more spacious than one might think.

A height-adjustable driver’s seat and a tilt/telescoping steering column are both supplied as standard equipment to ensure that a perfect driving position can be acquired by all sizes within the human map.

Once comfortably fitted to the motoring post, drivers will immediately appreciate the wonderful torque-inspired performance underfoot. The diesel mill effortlessly propels the Jetta in all driving scenarios but it’s not just the right foot that induces pleasure.

The 2010 Jetta TDI is a nicely weighted sedan with handling capabilities that surprise. I had the pleasure of taking an on-track performance-driving course in which we used this exact vehicle to learn the finer intricacies of making a car dance on its four wheels through compound corners, switchbacks and s-turns.

Throughout the program, I came to appreciate the predictable, balanced handling dynamics of VW’s mid-size Jetta; this ride is highly toss’able and fun to push on the track. It’s remarkably poised and competent given its smooth ride properties and modest pricing.
