The new 2010 Volvo XC60 boasts the highest base price among the dozen premium compact SUVs currently available in Canada. It's nearly $5,000 more expensive than cheapest the runner-up -- the Infiniti EX35.

The Volvo base price runs around $4,000 more than the new Mercedes GLK and Acura RDX. This premium is not as substantial however when compared to the Audi Q5 (approximately $2,000), and especially the BMW X3 ($195).

In order to stimulate consumer interest for this exclusive vehicle, Volvo can't rely solely on engine power. In fact, said Infiniti is more potent than the XC60 (297 vs. 281 horsepower). Others, such as the Q5, X3, GLK and Murano (ranging from 260 to 270 horsepower), are trailing the new Swedish crossover by a very thin margin.

Volvo executives will need to emphasize three distinctive attributes of their newborn child: 1) City Safety, an industry-exclusive system which marks a technological revolution; 2) a refreshingly modern design that contrasts with the plain, unimaginative styling of some rivals; and 3) the fact that it's all-new which, for premium compact SUVs, is a big deal in terms of "wow" and "have you seen it?" factors in some circles of society. Unfortunately for companies that produce such vehicles, their popularity tends to fade quickly, much like sports coupes. BMW is experiencing a decrease in X3 sales even though it remains a highly-desirable crossover.

Despite a high price, the stylish 2010 Volvo XC60 is bound to enjoy commercial success for at least a couple of years. There's a dark cloud floating on the horizon, though. Rumor has it that Ford Motor Company could soon sell all of its shares in Volvo (a brand it has owned since 1999), which might discourage some potential XC60 buyers. However, should Volvo's new owner prove as serious and dedicated as Tata Motors, which purchased both Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford in 2008, products from the Swedish automaker could become more attractive, starting with the XC60.
