BMW enters the premium compact segment with new X1
Next year, the X3 will no longer be the smallest utility vehicle in BMW's stable. The brand is adding another model to their family of 'X' series vehicles called the X1, and says that their latest will combine expertise in interior comfort, exterior design and drivetrain efficiency for a new customer.

The BMW X1 was to offer a unique driving experience in the compact class and unparalleled efficiency throughout the entire segment of BMW X models."

The X1 carries a fascia similar to that of the BMW 1-Series, and it's available with all of the advanced hardware BMW shoppers have come to expect. Test-drivers can expect a versatile, compact and agile machine that's easy to park and willing to accommodate a generous amount of gear. Ideal for a variety of lifestyles, the X1 promises the confidence of an SUV without the clumsy driving dynamics and hefty fuel bills.

"Like every BMW X model, the BMW X1 again marks the breakthrough into a new, clearly defined market segment" states Dr. Klaus Draeger, Board Member Development of BMW AG. "Throughout the entire development process, our ultimate objective with the BMW X1 was to offer a unique driving experience in the compact class and unparalleled efficiency throughout the entire segment of BMW X models."

According to BMW, the X1 boasts three full-sized split-folding seats in the rear, alongside 1,350 litres of maximum luggage capacity. For comparison's sake, that's about the same as a Dodge Caliber.

X1 drivers will benefit from the latest version of BMW's iDrive interface, an available navigation system, high-end audio systems and even automatic high beams. A power panoramic roof is available optionally, and buyers can specify a variety of interior color schemes to fit their personal tastes. A commanding driving position and plenty of handy storage compartments are promised as well.

X1 safety is handled by the usual slew of airbags, with front, side and head curtains as standard. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with integrated Dynamic Traction Control is also included, and BMW's Performance Control system can be added for additional thrills when the X1's limits are explored.
