BMW enters the premium compact segment with new X1
Advanced braking systems include Dry Brake and Fade Compensation-- ensuring that drivers get nothing less than a perfect stop, every single time. Adaptive brake lights and headlights round out the package.

It's not certain yet which, if any, of the X1's diesel engines will come to Canadian shores. Across the pond, X1 is available with a two-litre diesel four-cylinder engine option that generates between 143 and 204 horsepower. The diesel engine family is available with performance and efficiency-enhancing twin-turbo technology, and turns in top-notch fuel consumption and emissions figures.

The only gas engine in the X1 will be a 3.0-litre inline-6 that develops 258 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. It will likely be the powertrain of choice for North America.

A six-speed manual or automatic gearbox is available, as is an intelligent all-wheel drive system.

Maximum towing capacity for the X1 is rated around 4,400 lbs, and BMW says that mileage around 5 L/100km is possible--depending on the model in question.

A six-speed manual or automatic gearbox is available, as is an intelligent all-wheel drive system. Using a multi-plate centre clutch, engine power is divvied up between the axles as the computer sees fit for any given situation. Sounds like it'd do a heck of a number on our Canadian winters.

The X1 will be on sale next year as a 2011 model.
