The organizers of the New York Auto show have announced the finalists for the 2011 edition of the Car of the Year, Green Car of the Year and Performance Car of the Year awards.

A committee comprised of 66 renowned journalists from Asia, Europe and North and South America were asked to select ten finalists in the Car of the Year and Performance Car of the Year categories based on their professional experience.

The methodology used to determine the finalists of the Green Car of the Year award is a little different, however. Given the complexity of the technologies these vehicles employ, a group of three experts representing North America, Europe and Asia reviewed all the documentation and technical specifications pertaining to each eligible model to establish a list of six finalists.

In February, the same 66 journalists will re-evaluate the vehicles with a set of predetermined criteria and shave the number of finalists down to three per category. The top 3 will then be announced on March 1, 2011, at the Geneva Motor Show.

The New York International Auto Show will be held from April 22 to May 1, 2011, and the winners of the prestigious award will be announced on the eve of the public opening of the show.
