Sporty handling, too
The basic Edge isn’t lauded for its ability to devour curves with the agility and confidence of its Euro competitors. However, the Sport version of the North-American ride is much closer to achieving that Euro-competency and composure.
While its ride quality is on the firm side, the Edge Sport feels solid, sound and composed as it powers through the twists and turns of life on the road. Personally though, I’d forgo a slight edge (sorry for the pun) in handling in favor of a smoother ride, in which case the Edge Limited would be more my match.
Others, of course, may opt for the crisper response of the Edge Sport, and I totally get it. They may also appreciate the vehicle’s heavy steering but again, I’d prefer something less weighty for everyday usage.
On the Edge of expensive
I don’t think of the Edge as a premium-level ride, and therefore find the “as tested” price of $47,399 to be on the pricey side, especially when one considers that the well-equipped Edge SE with front-wheel-drive is tagged at a reasonable $27,999.
Despite the $20K spread between top and bottom of the Edge lineup, the vehicle is nicely sized, attractive and highly functional when equipped with AWD. Whether doling out the extra coin to gain more power and flashy 22-inch wheels is worth it or not is debatable.
Nonetheless, Ford has taken the popular Edge to the cutting-edge of connectivity with their SYNC and MyFord Touch electronics. These systems, while requiring some adaptation to fully utilize, place Ford in a lead position that will undoubtedly attract many tech-savvy individuals to the brand.
