The engine-maker's touch
You’ll appreciate the wonderful smoothness with which this S 63 accelerates (even when you have to hold it in check on our Canadian roads). You can thank the V8’s twin turbos for that, and the way they complement each other, as well as AMG’s exclusive 7-speed Speedshift MCT autobox.

This transmission, shared by the C 63, SL 63, E 63 and CL 63, typically allows you to take off in second gear thanks to the considerable torque of the V8 engine (589 ft-lb in the normal version and 663 in the Performance model). It then quickly upshifts without indisposing the occupants in the least. Now that’s comfort.

Safer than a tank
The beauty of this mechanical accomplishment lies not only in its intrinsic power. The inclusion of active and passive safety systems also plays a big part in the development of a Mercedes.

According to Jochen Hermann, Director Brakes, Driver Assistance Systems and Chassis Systems, Mercedes-Benz Cars, a study conducted by the Federal Office of Statistics in Germany shows that motorists driving a Mercedes E-Class or S-Class are 10.4% less likely to sustain serious injuries.

Now there’s a fantastic way to introduce the two new active safety systems included in the S 63. They’re actually the evolution of systems that already exist: Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane-Keeping Assist.

Until now, these systems worked strictly on a warning basis. By way of warning lights and sounds, they alert the distracted driver of imminent accident situations.
