The engine-maker's touch
The latest draft of these systems adds a dynamic aspect as well. In the case of Active Blind Spot Assist, when the on-board computer detects a risk of collision it launches a two-step intervention. For example, when drivers head towards the right lane before having completed their passing manoeuvre on the highway, audio and visual warnings are issued. If drivers don’t heed them, the system lightly applies the brakes via the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to the side opposite the manoeuvre, causing the vehicle to deviate slightly. This is intended to reduce the risk of collision and, especially, make drivers aware of the situation.

Active Lane-Keeping Assist acts in a similar fashion, using on-board cameras to allow the computer to “follow” the lanes outlined on the road. When the system detects that the car is veering off its lane, it sends vibrations through the steering wheel to alert the driver. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system lightly applies the brakes via ESP to the rear wheel opposite the deviation to prevent the anticipated loss of control.

It must be said, though, that despite the intervention of these systems, you maintain control over the vehicle and can either correct or pursue your manoeuvre.

A mobile concert hall
Beyond the technological hardware designed to help motorists drive better (and behave better too), the S 63 offers all the splendour of the S-Class machines on top of all the possibilities of Mercedes’s Designo and AMG Performance Studio.

One look at the S 63’s options list, for instance, will give the accomplished music-lover an extra reason to opt for the car: it features the impressive BeoSound system developed by Bang & Olufsen specifically for the S-Class models.

The 1,200-watt system uses fifteen speakers, including four tweeters housed in the A and B pillars, as well as a digital sound processor, transforming this AMG cabin into a veritable concert hall. The sound quality is simply breathtaking, highlighting the nuances of the recorded pieces and transporting the occupants into an exquisitely sonorous world.

A few well-off Canadians will be lucky enough to get their hands on this impressive sedan from October on, when the new S 63 will arrive in Mercedes-Benz dealerships.
