Price for a base JA model is $17,835 before tax, freight and delivery; it may sound more expensive than the competition, but unlike them, the SX4 has no stripped model. Standard features include power windows, keyless entry, air conditioning, a CD player with MP3 file playback, variable intermittent wipers, antilock brakes and the aforementioned airbags.
Our Sport model with the CVT and the optional stability control system costs $21,485 and adds an intelligent key system, climate control, heated front seats and mirrors, a sound system upgrade with wheel-mounted controls (which could sound better), fog lamps and alloy wheels. Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port would be nice, but they’re not available.
In comparison, a Honda Civic SE goes for $20,780, a Toyota Corolla S goes for $21,860, a Mitsubishi Lancer SE goes for $20,598 and a Mazda3 GS goes for $20,795.
Apart from its shortcomings, and there aren’t many, the SX4’s problem is that it seems to be in search of an identity. Does its name mean anything? Does the ‘4’ in its name mean 4 cylinders? 4 wheels? 4 floor mats?
In addition, Suzuki’s dealer network isn’t very big, either, so there might not be one in your neck of the woods.
But what you need to know is that the Suzuki SX4 is a roomy, fun to drive compact sedan that can hold its own against the segment leaders. It may not be the best one, but it deserves to be considered the next time you’ll be in car-shopping mode.
