Survivor of a dying breed
In addition of the four-wheel drive system’s low range and increased approach and departure angles, a slew of electronic devices are included in this version of the 4Runner to assist you in your quest to conquer the boonies. The Multi-Terrain Select System allows you to choose what kind of surface you want to tackle, while the Crawl Control offers five throttle and brake control settings.

The 2011 4Runner starts out at a reasonable $36,820 before adding taxes, freight and delivery charges, while the Trail Edition goes for $44,130. Since we’re not hardcore off-roaders, we’d be perfectly happy with the base SR5, even if it also includes the Party Mode. That was a joke.

Competition includes Toyota’s own FJ Cruiser and the Nissan Xterra, priced from $33K to $40K. The most serious threat, however, is the Jeep Grand Cherokee which is priced about the same as the 4Runner and is also a capable off-road machine.

The 4Runner is a very competent off-road performer that also offers a decent highway ride and a spacious interior. However, it doesn’t feel as though it was redesigned just last year. If you like that old-school SUV style and drive, go for it. If you’re not planning on hitting the trails anytime soon, a crossover would a better option.
