According to Autocar, Mazda will use the arrival of the 2012 CX-5 to introduce a 2.2-litre, SKYACTIV diesel mill coupled with a six-speed manual transmission and producing 173 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.

The European and Asian markets already have that option, but the engine that will be powering the automaker’s next crossover should consume 20% less fuel than its predecessor and emit less than 120 g of CO2 per kilometre.

Various sources have noted that Mazda may become the first Japanese manufacturer to take the diesel plunge, a technology that would probably be welcomed by Canadian and American looking to save at the pump.

Historically, however, Mazda has abstained from offering diesel engines in North America, turning to conventional gas engines instead.

So don’t be surprised if we see the redesigned version of the 2012 Mazda3’s 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder SKYACTIV in the CX-5.

Earlier this week, rumours about a diesel engine powering the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan have also surfaced, perhaps indicating that the once-reviled diesel engine may be about to make a major comeback on the continent.

At least, that’s what we’re hoping. Anyone who has ever driven a diesel SUV or crossover will tell you how awesome they are in terms of torque and fuel economy.
