Canada is scheduled to get three models of the SLK-Class. The SLK350 is available now and utilizes a revised 3.5-litre, direct-injected V6 that puts out 302 horsepower. This engine is only available with a 7-speed automatic with manual mode that Mercedes refers to as the 7G-Tronic.

Coming in November of 2011 is the SLK250 that will be powered by a new 1.8-litre, turbo 4-cylinder engine. This mighty mite makes use of a large intercooler mounted under the radiator to help it produce its 201 horsepower.

The version that enthusiasts drool over will join the line-up in November as well. An AMG version based on the 5.5-litre V8 and will carry the designation SLK55 AMG, as before. Needless to say, AMG will add suspension upgrades and improved interior appointments to match the engine upgrades.

Once you get behind the wheel and push the button (keyless ignition is available), the throaty burble of the V6 lets you know that your fun is about to begin. Choose between Eco, Sport or Manual which set the powertrain electronics. You then choose between Normal (the default setting) and Sport (firm but fun) settings on the available electrically-adjustable suspension.

Pull the gearshift out of park and be prepared to get a grin on your face! When you dive in to the first corner, the grin will get bigger. It is hard to believe that a car that acts so much like a boulevard cruiser can be transformed by a couple of corners. That soft ride doesn’t mean the body will lean in the corners. Mercedes engineers have made sure that the only leaning done is by you in the seat as the building G-forces push you farther into the well-padded edge of the seat.

The dimensions of the car are such that it is easy to get used to where the corners are. This means getting into a parking space or clipping the apex of a corner can be done with equal confidence.

Hard braking doesn’t upset the balance of the car, but it does help settle the car on the suspension. If you do happen to make a bit of a mistake, the electronics will subtly help you so that others think you can drive like Sebastian Vettel. Turn the electronics off and you are at the mercy of a rear-wheel drive car that gives little warning of breaking loose.
