Standard are 10 air bags and “Quiet Tuning,” which, in a Buick first, features active noise control; ceiling-mounted microphones detect engine noise, then a computer directs counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers and subwoofers.

Everything in the cabin is rendered in that Buick blend of light and dark warm tones, such as tan and chocolate brown. A small group of Canadian journalists had a chance to talk to one of Encore’s interior designers, Magdelena Kokoszynsku. Young and female, she seems an antithesis to what one might perceive to be the typical Buick target customer, but she begs to differ.

“Our generation doesn’t yet have that relationship (with Buick). For us, it’s almost like a fresh brand. I’ve never seen Buick as an old person’s vehicle. To me, it’s a new, fresh, and up and coming brand.”

And while Buick seems to be sticking with an old-world elegance vibe for its interiors, Kokoszynsku doesn’t see that as a barrier to Buick’s efforts to attract younger buyers. She notes that Buick is focused on making “beautiful” products, and that an attraction to beauty is not restricted to any age group. “I love my Buick,” says Kokoszynsku, who drivers a jet-black Regal with the turbo engine.
