It's got Subaru guts
A Subaru Boxer engine was chosen for duty in all three cars. It's a 2.0L unit that uses Toyota's direct injection technology, but the rest is all Subaru's work. It produces 200 metric hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque from 6,400 to 6,600 rpm. Six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes will be available.
Fuel consumption figures aren't sorted out yet, but Subaru expects them to be very low.
The front-engine, rear-wheel drive BRZ also gets an electric power steering unit and a suspension comprised of MacPherson struts up front and a double-wishbone configuration in back, while the front stabilizer bar is unusually connected to the struts. The car will also get a "sound management system", which basically funnels racy engine sounds into the cockpit.
What we'll get in Canada
The Canadian-spec BRZ will be offered in two trim levels. The base car will include 17" alloy wheels, a limited-slip differential, A/C, cruise control, HID headlights, heated mirrors as well as leather-wrapped wheel, shift knob and handbrake boot.
The yet-unnamed uplevel trim will add navigation, an intelligent key, leather & Alcantara upholstery, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a rear spoiler, fog lamps and silver interior trim. Ok, these features might seem unclean in a purified sports car, but the competition's got them.
The 2013 Subaru BRZ will arrive in Canada next June. Although pricing hasn't been determined yet, we should expect the base model to check in at just under $30,000. The only thing the folks at Subaru Canada told us was that "it will be cheaper than a WRX."
We can hardly wait to be purified by the BRZ.
