Pros: The Forte5 hatchback is now powered by the same engines and wears the same clothes as its sedan sibling. Good looks and lots of trim choices make the Forte5 a solid competitor.

Cons: Cost of entry is much higher than the Forte sedan as the Forte5 is not available in a base trim, unlike the Mazda3 which can be had for about $3,000 less

2014 Kia Forte5 Pricing: Pricing for the Forte5 starts at $19,495 for the LX+ manual-equipped model and $20,695 for the six-speed automatic with Active ECO. EX Automatic models go for $22,295 and adds 17-inch alloys, leather steering wheel and shift knob, UVO infotainment, and other options. SX models replace the 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a 1.6-litre turbocharged four and cost $23,795. Automatic-equipped SX models are $1,200 more at $24,995. The tippy-top SX Premium automatic will run you $28,395.

2014 Kia Forte5 Economy: Equipped with the new, more powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, the Forte5 is rated at 8.5/5.8L (city/highway) per 100 km with the manual transmission or 8.6/5.8L per 100 km with the six-speed automatic. Turbo 1.6-litre models are rated at 9.7/6.9L per 100 km for the manual and 9.7/6.7L per 100 km for the automatic.

Improvements and Changes: Arriving a year after its four-door brother, the Forte5 has undergone a complete overhaul. Not only does the hatchback Forte receive the same styling as the sedan – which is incredibly sharp – it also receives two new engines: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder.

Don’t Miss: SX models may be loaded up with lots of options, but they also come with a firmer ride. Drive lower trims as well to see which suspension firmness suits you best.

2014 Kia Forte5 Powertrain: The Forte5 is given the same engines as its sedan sibling sharing the same name. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder is the base engine, producing 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. SX models are equipped with the same 1.6-litre turbocharged engine as the Hyundai Veloster Turbo, boosting output to 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available, each with six cogs to play with.

Safety: The Kia Forte5 comes standard with six airbags (front, front seat-mounted side, and side curtain) available on all trims. Vehicle Stability Management, Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control Systems comes as standard on all trims as well.

Comparables: The compact hatchback market is growing in Canada, and Kia must do battle with the Ford Focus, Mazda3, Volkswagen Golf, Hyundai Elantra GT, Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, and Subaru Impreza 5-Door.
