Summary
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the first SUV to connect an electric motor to the front wheels and connect a second motor to the rear wheels, thus making it a 100% electric all-wheel drive vehicle. The twin 80 hp (60KW) motors are connected directly to the wheels, eliminating the need for driveshafts.

The internal combustion engine of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV powers a generator, which powers the electric motors, and also provides power to move the vehicle when required. It is used in conjunction with the two electric motors at high speeds, but reverts to powering only the generator in city use. There is an available 60 kilometres of electric-only autonomy.

The Outlander PHEV allows Mitsubishi to offer the practicality of a SUV, the economy of a green vehicle, the practicality of a 4X4 and approximately 875 kilometres of autonomy, which is the best of all worlds, and a definite winning recipe.
