Chevrolet is set to launch the redesigned 2016 Malibu at the upcoming New York Auto Show after intriguing pictures started surfacing on the web this week. It appears the midsize sedan will be longer and 300lb lighter, with a coupe-like profile, not to mention more fuel-efficient and more technologically advanced.

Using a blank slate approach, Chevrolet designers benefited from an entirely new architecture, which for Malibu includes a wheelbase nearly ten centimetres longer than the outgoing model. This will provide increased rear legroom and interior space.

“The roofline has been stretched rearward giving a more sleek profile, while the front wheels have moved forward and front and rear overhangs have been reduced,” said Ed Welburn, GM’s vice president of global design. “Along with the sculpted body side, these cues help Malibu appear more dynamic and sophisticated.”

More details about the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, including available powertrains, will be shared each week leading up to the vehicle’s global debut. It's expected to go on sale by the end of 2015.
