The 2016 Mazda MX-5 has officially landed on North American soil. The first shipment, which included hundreds of red little roadsters, arrived a few days ago aboard the Phoenix Leader. Deliveries will begin in the next couple of weeks.
In case you didn’t already know, the new, fourth-generation MX-5 -- have you ordered one yet? -- will be available in three trim levels with prices starting as follows:
- GX at $31,900;
- GS at $35,300;
- GT at $39,200.
Offering 20% more fuel economy than the outgoing model, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 is a bit less powerful but overall more spirited and fun to drive according to our very own Matt St-Pierre. The new 2.0L SKYACTIV-G 4-cylinder engine produces 155 horsepower (down from 167) and 148 lb-ft of torque (up from 140). In the hands of a good driver, acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes slightly more than six seconds only.
In keeping with today’s trend, the MX-5 has lost weight -- 80 kg (176 lbs) to be exact. This, naturally, does wonders for handling and manoeuvrability. Drivers will feel that the car is extremely nimble and responsive. As for transmissions, the choice comes down to a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic (the latter is a no-cost option).
