First Mitsubishi introduced the concept. Then the company teased Canadian consumers with the production model sold in other markets around the globe. Last fall, the company finally announced that its Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid was coming to our market. On Thursday at the Montreal Auto Show, the vehicle got its official Canadian premiere.
So long awaited has the model been that some consumers actually put down deposits for it several years ago, before having seen it or known its exact pricing. A sure selling point for the vehicle, even in those early days, was that it was going to be the only plug-in hybrid SUV in its category (MSRP of $42,998, before provincial incentives), not to mention the only one with a battery that could be 80% charged in under 30 minutes in quick charging (Level 3) mode. It was also going to be the only plug-in hybrid vehicle in Canada backed by a 10-10-5 warranty (or 10 years/160,000 km powertrain, 10 years/160,000 km on the lithium-ion battery, 5 years/100,000 km overall).
Hydro-Québec was an early customer, ordering 77 units for its fleet of vehicles.
“The Outlander PHEV is the most anticipated new-product in our history. A runaway success all over the world, it’s coming to Canada complete with Mitsubishi Motors’ top technological advances, all the best attributes of our highly successful Outlander model and a pricing strategy that is sure to delight consumers.”
