Chevrolet is bringing back one of its rarest modern truck trims. According to GM's fleet order guide, the Desert Boss package (RPO code PDK) will return as a limited-production option on the midsize 2027 Colorado ZR2.
First introduced as a single-year run for 2023 with roughly 600 units built, the new Desert Boss shifts away from being merely an accessory bundle and gains serious mechanical capability.

Heavy-duty suspension meets tactical upgrades
The centrepiece of the 2027 package is the addition of Multimatic jounce control dampers, a high-end suspension feature previously reserved for the range-topping ZR2 Bison. Working alongside the ZR2's standard Multimatic DSSV dampers, these secondary units use nitrogen-charged hydraulic bump stops to progressively absorb kinetic energy and prevent bottoming out during high-speed off-road impacts.
Offered as a dealer-installed (LPO) package, the 2027 Desert Boss also includes:
- • Dedicated off-road front bumper package (BPH)
- • Off-road auxiliary lighting package (PCL)
- • Tech Bronze-finished recovery hooks
- • Exclusive door sill plates and fender decals

Upgraded powertrain and package limitations
Under the hood, all 2027 Colorados feature an updated 2.7L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (L4B), mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Output increases to 350 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, up from 310 hp and 430 lb-ft in previous model years. Power is routed through standard 33-inch tires with front and rear locking differentials.
Buyers looking to configure their ZR2 will have to make some choices. Chevrolet confirmed the Desert Boss cannot be combined with either the ZR2 Bison or the Midnight Edition packages to avoid hardware and styling overlap.
Official pricing has not yet been announced. However, with the 2026 Colorado ZR2 starting around $52,795 USD (equivalent to roughly $72,500 CAD), adding the revived Desert Boss treatment is expected to push final sticker prices into the $63,000 USD range when production begins at GM's Wentzville, Missouri assembly plant.
