Volkswagen has released a first teaser image of the upcoming 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, offering a glimpse at the next generation of its two-row midsize crossover. VW is signaling a significant overhaul for the model, which remains a key pillar in the German automaker’s North American lineup. It will arrive a few months after the revised new three-row 2027 Atlas, expected this coming fall.
The teaser image, as such images are wont to do, reveals not that much and is intended mostly to get folks talking about it (which is working, evidently). The image is of the top portion of the rear end, and we do note a fairly good-sized diffuser up top and slanted glass for the hatch.
2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport – What we’re expecting
The smaller sibling of the three-row Atlas is built on the MQB Evo platform, and it will feature updated design elements like stacked crystal LED lighting and a more coupe-style silhouette.
For the moment, VW remains mum about what we’ll find under the hood of the new Atlas Cross Sport. It’s likely we’ll see refinements to improve efficiency, with the automaker calling on an updated turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, offering an uptick in horsepower and torque compared to the current model.
Also on tap, potentially: enhancements to tow ratings and driver-assistance technologies tailored for long-distance travel.
A hybrid, later
While Volkswagen is working on a hybrid configuration for the new Atlas Cross Sport, it’s not expected that will be ready until well into 2027.
In the U.S., consumers will get a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations, but we could well only see the latter in Canada. To be confirmed.
Inside, the updated crossover will likely showcase Volkswagen's newest digital cockpit interface, upgraded cabin materials and expanded connectivity features, accessible via a 15-inch touchscreen.
We expect Volkswagen to reveal full specifications, Canadian pricing and trim details for the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport in the coming months, with dealership arrivals scheduled for early next year.
