Until then a wide assortment of Volkswagen and Audi cars are affected by the recall. These include the Volkswagen New Beetle, Golf, GTI, Jetta and Passat, plus the Audi A4 and TT. But 4-cylinder engine VWs and Audis aren't the only cars affected. All 2.8-L VR6 engine models, W8 Passats and Audis with 3.0-L V6 engines will need the replacement part too.
While this is a serious issue, under most conditions it's not life threatening. A faulty ignition coil, which normally provides a steady flow of electrical current to the engine's spark plugs when running, will often result in sporadic starting problems, a rough idle or inconsistent acceleration, and occasionally complete engine failure. The latter could be dangerous if at highway speeds or in if it stalled while attempting to cross a busy intersection.

Incidentally the part is not manufactured by Volkswagen, but outsourced by a now unnamed supplier. The manufacturer has put overtime shifts into place to replace the faulty part while another supplier has begun manufacturing the item to meet demand.
VW and Audi customers who could potentially be affected will be notified soon by mail, with replacement starting as soon as sufficient parts arrive. Alternative transportation at cost will be made available.
