Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance are currently working on a bigger variant of the next-generation fortwo, the fortwo+2, set to go on sale in early 2012. We were able to learn a little more about it, thanks to the images released of a clay model built on a 1:4 scale.

As its name implies, this smart will be able to accommodate two extra passengers. The engineers had to considerably lengthen and broaden the model, in order to offer the maximum level of comfort and create a decent amount of space both in the cabin and trunk. Though unmistakably a smart, it will include new features such as an original grille and slimmer headlamps.

The fortwo+2 will be powered by the same 70-hp inline-3. However, the collaboration between Daimler and Renault-Nissan may well see the availability of a new power plant. Obviously, this is all just speculation at the moment.

We should find out a lot more about the fortwo+2 at its official unveiling at the Frankfurt Auto Show next September.
