A proven V6 powerplant

The Acura engineers borrowed the 3.5 litre V6 engine found in the Odyssey minivan. They beefed up the 3.2 CL Type S block and boosted its output to 240 hp at 5 300 rpm and its torque to 245 lb-ft at 3 000, which accounts for quite an upgrade compared to the minivans 210 horsepower and 229 lb-ft twist.

By emphasizing low-end torque, the Acura engineers endowed the vehicle with a vigorous response and a good towing ability. The MDX dashes from 0 to 100 km/h in around 9 seconds.

The new MDX displays an amazing performance considering its 1992 kg (4 387 lb) weight. Besides, its engine meets the stringent low emission requirements (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) and still returns a decent fuel economy. However, you must feed the MDX with premium fuel.

Unlike 4X4's built on side railed chassis, the MDX features a sturdy monocoque with a four-wheel independent suspension including sophisticated components.

The vehicle thus provides a firm ride and a well-balanced handling devoid of jerking. Its firmness stands between the Lexus RX 300 and BMW X5. The Michelin tires, with their special tread pattern designed for off-roading, have a lot of grip, but generate road noise.

The rack and pinion steering allows easy parking lot maneuvers. We have to specify that it is high speed sensitive and a little too light.

The vehicle is equipped with four disc brakes and anti-lock. Overassisted at the start, the brakes ensure assuring stops and are enduring.

Even if the vehicle tends to step out when pushed to limit of the envelope on bumpy and slippery surfaces, the cornering maneuvers are done with ease. Let's specify that the vehicle retains its set course impeccably on account of its stability and predictability.
