The MDX is endowed with an all wheel drive system called VTM-4 (Variable Torque Management 4 Wheel Drive). On dry pavement condition, the system runs as front wheel drive vehicle, engaging the rear wheels only when need for better drivability.

Under strong acceleration, the variable torque management will activate the two rear electromagnetic clutches to provide a better power split to the four wheels, thus improving divrability up to 55 % of the torque. Unlike competitors, the operation is transparent and necessitates no brake interaction.

The MDX, although not having a low range gear mode, still manages to maximize driveability thanks to a maximum drive split. By pushing a lock button, you can pull out of trouble if you happen to get stuck.

The system only works at low speeds with the lever in first, second or reverse positions. The vehicle has to be stopped in order to activate the system that will automatically disengage at 30 km/h.

Even if that system is not the best, it still allows a decent performance for a luxury SUV. The MDS boasts of a good balance both on andoff-road.

Pros:
- Quite advanced all wheel drive system
- Roomy and easy to transform interior
- Amazing nimbleness

Cons:
- Wind noise from the baggage rack when cruising at high speed
- No cosmetics on body
- No low mode
